Historical Background

Commissioned between 1937 and 1941, the Yorktown-class carriers represented the most advanced carrier design in the world prior to World War II. Displacing approximately 25,500 tons fully loaded, they could carry around 90 aircraft and achieve speeds exceeding 32 knots.

The three ships became legendary:

  • USS Yorktown (CV-5) fought at Coral Sea and Midway before being lost after the Battle of Midway.

  • USS Enterprise (CV-6) became the most decorated U.S. warship of World War II, earning 20 battle stars and participating in nearly every major Pacific campaign.

  • USS Hornet (CV-8) launched the famous Doolittle Raid against Japan before being lost during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands.
