Warship Pictorial No. 15 – Kriegsmarine Schnellboote (German E-Boats)
The German Schnellboot—known to the Allies as the E-Boat—was one of the most effective fast attack craft of World War II. Faster, larger, and more seaworthy than many of its Allied counterparts, the Schnellboot served in the North Sea, English Channel, Baltic, Mediterranean, and Black Sea throughout the war.
Warship Pictorial No. 15: Kriegsmarine Schnellboote provides an extensive photographic study of these famous vessels using large-format archival photographs accompanied by detailed captions.

Historical Background
The German Schnellboot was developed during the 1930s as a high-speed offensive weapon capable of launching torpedo attacks against larger Allied warships and merchant convoys. Powered by three Daimler-Benz diesel engines, later S-boats could exceed 40 knots while maintaining excellent seaworthiness in rough waters.
Unlike many Allied motor torpedo boats, the Schnellboot featured a rounded hull design that provided greater range, stability, and endurance. These vessels were armed with:
Two or four 533 mm torpedo tubes
20 mm anti-aircraft cannon
37 mm cannon (later versions)
Machine guns
Naval mines on specialized missions
S-Boats conducted thousands of combat patrols during World War II, operating in the English Channel, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, Black Sea, and North Sea. Their speed, stealth, and heavy armament made them formidable opponents throughout the conflict.
