Historical Background
Entering service in 1961, the F-4B became the U.S. Navy's premier fleet defense fighter and later saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War. Flying from carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin, Navy and Marine Corps Phantom crews engaged MiGs, escorted strike aircraft, and delivered ordnance against targets throughout Southeast Asia.
The F-4B established the Phantom's reputation and laid the foundation for the many variants that followed, eventually resulting in more than 5,000 Phantoms being built.
