The Tamiya 1/48 Douglas F4D-1 Skyray is a unique and eye-catching kit of one of the U.S. Navy’s most distinctive early jet fighters. Nicknamed the “Ford” (F-four-D), the Skyray was a delta-wing interceptor designed for high climb rates and rapid response during the early Cold War era.

This kit accurately captures the Skyray’s unusual delta-wing design, with options to display the wingtips folded for carrier deck scenes or extended for flight configuration.

Tamiya’s molding features fine recessed panel lines and solid overall detail, including a well-rendered cockpit, detailed landing gear, and clean external stores such as Sidewinder missiles and rocket pods.  The kit also includes a pilot figure and multiple marking options for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft.

While the tooling dates back to the late 1990s, it still builds into an accurate representation of the aircraft. Fit is generally good, though not quite at modern Tamiya standards—some minor cleanup and adjustment may be needed during assembly.
