Historical Background

The Firefly was created by British engineers who installed the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun into the Sherman V (M4A4) chassis. The conversion gave Allied armored units a weapon capable of engaging Panthers and Tigers on more equal terms.

During the Normandy campaign, Fireflies were often distributed among standard Sherman troops, with one Firefly assigned to each troop of tanks. Their presence proved invaluable during the fighting across France, Belgium, and Germany.
