Historical Background

The Lotus Type 78 debuted in 1977 under the direction of legendary designer Colin Chapman. By shaping the sidepods like inverted aircraft wings and sealing airflow beneath the car, Lotus created the first successful ground-effect Formula One car.

Driven by Mario Andretti and Gunnar Nilsson, the Lotus 78 won five Grands Prix during the 1977 season and paved the way for the championship-winning Lotus 79 in 1978.

The Type 78 remains one of the most historically significant Formula One cars ever built.
