Historical Background
Designed by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, the F6F Hellcat first flew in 1942 and entered combat in 1943. Powered by the dependable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine producing approximately 2,000 horsepower, the Hellcat quickly established air superiority across the Pacific.
Armed with six .50 caliber Browning machine guns and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, the Hellcat served as both a fighter and fighter-bomber. It excelled in fleet defense, close air support, and ground attack missions.
Hellcat pilots were credited with destroying more than 5,000 Japanese aircraft, achieving an extraordinary kill ratio of approximately 19:1. The aircraft became famous during battles including:
