Special Hobby 1/32 Yakovlev Yak-3 "Normandie-Niemen"

The Yakovlev Yak-3 was one of the finest Soviet fighters of World War II. Lightweight, agile, and exceptionally effective at low and medium altitudes, it earned a reputation as one of the Luftwaffe's most respected opponents on the Eastern Front.

This special Normandie-Niemen release commemorates the famous Free French fighter regiment that flew Soviet-built Yak fighters alongside Soviet forces against Germany. The unit became one of the most decorated Allied squadrons of the war, and its pilots returned to France after the war in the cockpits of their Yak-3s.

The Hi-Tech edition includes resin wheels, resin exhausts, photo-etched cockpit details, seat belts, and pre-cut canopy masks. Special Hobby also provides markings for several famous French aces, including aircraft carrying the regiment's distinctive lightning-bolt markings.

Historical Background

The Normandie-Niemen Regiment was formed by Free French volunteers who fought alongside Soviet forces beginning in 1943. Flying Yak fighters, the regiment achieved an impressive combat record and became one of the most famous Franco-Soviet military units of the war.

The Yak-3 entered combat in 1944 and quickly gained a reputation for exceptional maneuverability and combat effectiveness. German pilots were reportedly advised to avoid low-altitude dogfights with the aircraft whenever possible. Many of the Normandie-Niemen Regiment's victories were achieved while flying Yak-3s.
