Full Product Description

Special Hobby 1/32 Westland Whirlwind F Mk.I

The Westland Whirlwind was one of the most advanced fighters in the RAF at the outbreak of World War II. Designed around four nose-mounted Hispano 20mm cannons and powered by twin Rolls-Royce Peregrine engines, the Whirlwind combined heavy firepower, excellent handling, and impressive low-level performance.

Although production was limited due to engine availability, the Whirlwind served with distinction over the English Channel and occupied Europe. Its concentrated cannon armament made it one of the most heavily armed fighters in RAF service during the early years of the war.

Special Hobby's 1/32 scale Whirlwind is the first modern-tool injection-molded kit of this aircraft in large scale. The model features detailed cockpit components, accurate wheel wells, highly detailed cannon nose, beautifully engraved panel lines and rivet detail, and multiple RAF camouflage options.

Historical Background

The Whirlwind entered RAF service in 1940 and was unlike any other British fighter. Its twin-engine configuration, streamlined fuselage, and powerful cannon battery gave it exceptional striking power. Pilots praised its maneuverability and heavy armament, particularly during low-level fighter sweeps and anti-shipping missions.

Despite its promise, limited production of the Peregrine engine restricted the aircraft's future development. Just over one hundred Whirlwinds were built, making it one of the rarest RAF fighters to see operational service during World War II.
