Full Product Description

Special Hobby 1/32 IAR-81 BoPi Dive Bomber

The IAR-81 BoPi was Romania's indigenous fighter-bomber and dive bomber developed from the successful IAR-80 fighter. Designed by Industria Aeronautică Română (IAR), the aircraft combined fighter performance with dive-bombing capability and served extensively on the Eastern Front, defending Romania and supporting Axis operations against the Soviet Union.

Special Hobby's 1/32 scale IAR-81 BoPi is a highly detailed multimedia kit featuring injection-molded plastic parts, resin upgrades, photo-etched details, and beautifully printed decals. The kit captures the unique appearance of this lesser-known Axis aircraft and provides an excellent alternative to the more commonly modeled Bf 109s and Fw 190s.

Historical Background

The IAR-81 was developed when Romania needed a dedicated dive bomber but could not obtain sufficient numbers of German Ju 87 Stukas. Engineers modified the existing IAR-80 fighter design by adding a centerline bomb cradle and bomb-carrying capability.

The aircraft fought on the Eastern Front, participated in the defense of the Ploiești oil fields, and later served in air-defense and ground-attack roles. Following Romania's switch to the Allied side in 1944, surviving aircraft continued operations against German forces until the end of the war.
