Historical Background
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX was introduced in 1942 as an urgent response to the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Rather than waiting for the next-generation Spitfire Mk.VIII, engineers installed the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine into the existing Mk.V airframe, creating one of the finest fighters of World War II.
The Mk.IX restored parity with the Luftwaffe and remained in frontline service through the Normandy invasion and the final defeat of Germany. More than 5,600 Mk.IXs were built, making it one of the most numerous and successful Spitfire variants.
