Historical Background
The Bf 109K-4 entered service in late 1944 as the Luftwaffe attempted to standardize production and improve fighter performance. Powered by the DB 605D engine and armed with a 30mm MK 108 cannon firing through the propeller hub, the K-4 was capable of speeds exceeding 440 mph and could challenge virtually any Allied piston-engine fighter.
Although introduced too late and in too few numbers to affect the outcome of the war, the K-4 represented the pinnacle of Bf 109 development and remains one of the most respected late-war Luftwaffe fighters.
