Historical Background

By the middle years of World War II, the Ju 88 had evolved far beyond its original role as a fast medium bomber. Improved engines, radar-equipped night fighter conversions, heavy fighter variants, torpedo bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft demonstrated the remarkable adaptability of the basic design.

Ju 88 night fighters became one of Germany's principal defenses against RAF Bomber Command, while maritime versions attacked Allied shipping throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The aircraft continued serving on every major front until Germany's surrender in 1945.

More than 15,000 Ju 88s of all variants were produced, making it one of the Luftwaffe's most important combat aircraft.
