Historical Background

The Curtiss P-40 was one of the most widely used Allied fighters of World War II. Derived from the earlier P-36 Hawk, it was powered by the reliable Allison V-1710 liquid-cooled V-12 engine and became famous for its rugged construction and ability to absorb battle damage.

The P-40E introduced six .50 caliber Browning machine guns, improved armor protection, and greater firepower, while the later P-40K featured an upgraded Allison engine and improved directional stability.

The aircraft served with the U.S. Army Air Forces, Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal New Zealand Air Force, Soviet Air Force, and the Chinese Air Force. It gained legendary status with the American Volunteer Group ("Flying Tigers"), whose shark-mouth markings became one of the most recognizable paint schemes of the war.
