Italeri 1/72 CANT Z.501 “Gabbiano” Flying Boat

Kit No. 112

Italeri 1/72 CANT Z.501 Gabbiano

The CANT Z.501 “Gabbiano” (“Seagull”) was one of Italy’s most distinctive maritime reconnaissance aircraft of the Second World War. Designed by famed engineer Filippo Zappata for Cantieri Riuniti dell’Adriatico (C.R.D.A.), the large single-engine flying boat served throughout the Mediterranean theater performing reconnaissance, air-sea rescue, anti-submarine patrol, and convoy escort missions.

Featuring a large parasol wing, central hull, and stabilizing floats, the aircraft developed a reputation for long endurance and good range, though by WWII standards it had become vulnerable to enemy fighters due to limited speed and defensive armament. Italian crews reportedly nicknamed it “Mammaiuto” (“Mama help me!”) because of its vulnerability in combat.

Italeri’s 1/72 scale kit recreates this unusual flying boat with classic tooling that dates back to the original Italaerei era. The latest reissue includes updated decals for four versions and modern color instruction sheets while retaining the nostalgic character of the original molds.

Builder & Reviewer Feedback

Builders consistently praise the kit for:

  • Very unusual and eye-catching subject

  • Excellent shelf presence

  • Nostalgic classic Italeri/Italaerei tooling

  • Good overall aircraft shape

  • Impressive size for 1/72 scale

  • Strong weathering potential

  • Excellent Mediterranean diorama possibilities

Modeling Madness described the aircraft itself as:

“a most unusual looking design” and noted the kit builds into an attractive representation of the flying boat.

Forum builders and reviewers commonly highlight:

  • Distinctive parasol-wing appearance

  • Good basis for advanced detailing

  • Interesting alternative to mainstream WWII aircraft

  • Large surface areas ideal for faded maritime weathering

  • Impressive display model once completed

However, because the tooling originates from the 1970s, builders frequently mention:

  • Raised panel lines

  • Simplified cockpit detail

  • Flash cleanup required

  • Thick clear parts

  • Limited interior detail

  • Careful alignment needed for wing struts and floats

  • Traditional “old-school” aircraft model assembly techniques required

A 2024 YouTube review specifically described the latest boxing as:

“another old tooled kit” originating from the 1972 release, while still appreciating the subject and nostalgic appeal.

Advanced modelers commonly improve the kit with:

  • Scratchbuilt cockpit detail

  • Rigging enhancements

  • Replacement machine guns

  • Resin engines

  • Aftermarket canopy masks

  • Water diorama bases
