Italeri 1/72 AC-119K Stinger Gunship

Kit No. 1468

The Fairchild AC-119K “Stinger” represented one of the most heavily armed and unusual gunships used during the Vietnam War. Developed from the C-119 Flying Boxcar transport aircraft, the AC-119K was converted into a dedicated night attack platform capable of interdicting enemy truck convoys and supply routes along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

The aircraft combined four 7.62mm miniguns with two 20mm cannons, advanced night sensors, and additional jet engines mounted under the wings to improve takeoff performance while carrying massive ammunition loads. The type became highly effective during nighttime operations before eventually being replaced by the more capable AC-130 gunships.

Italeri’s 1/72 scale kit captures the distinctive twin-tail gunship configuration with detailed fuselage modifications, side-firing gun ports, underwing jet engines, and markings for multiple Vietnam-era aircraft.

Builder & Reviewer Feedback

Builders consistently praise the kit for:

  • Unique Vietnam War subject matter

  • Impressive twin-boom display presence

  • Distinctive gunship appearance

  • Good overall aircraft proportions

  • Excellent decal options

  • Strong weathering potential

  • Rare alternative to standard bombers and fighters

Retailer descriptions frequently highlight:

  • Super decal sheet for four versions

  • Large finished size

  • Vietnam War gunship configuration

  • Detailed external gunship modifications

Modeling communities and aircraft builders commonly note:

  • Excellent centerpiece potential

  • Interesting operational history

  • Large canvas for weathering and fading

  • Strong shelf impact due to unusual shape

  • Good value compared to rare aftermarket or resin gunship kits

Builders also commonly mention several challenges:

  • Large fuselage seams require patience

  • Older tooling characteristics in some areas

  • Interior detail is somewhat basic

  • Wing alignment benefits from dry fitting

  • Clear parts require careful handling

  • Gunship modifications need careful cleanup

Because the AC-119K is a relatively rare subject in injection-molded plastic, many builders are willing to accept some older-tooling limitations in exchange for the uniqueness of the aircraft itself.

Advanced modelers frequently add:

  • Cargo bay detailing

  • Interior lighting

  • Weathered gun barrels

  • Crew figures

  • Vietnam airbase dioramas

  • Open cargo door detailing

Builders frequently recommend heavy exhaust staining and faded Southeast Asia operational weathering to capture the hard-used appearance of Vietnam gunships.
