Full Product Description

Italeri 1/48 Lockheed S-3A/B Viking

The Lockheed S-3 Viking entered U.S. Navy service during the 1970s as a carrier-based anti-submarine warfare platform. Equipped with advanced radar, sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection equipment, and sophisticated sensors, the Viking became one of the most capable maritime patrol aircraft ever operated from aircraft carriers.

As submarine threats evolved, the aircraft's mission expanded to include sea surveillance, aerial refueling, electronic warfare support, surface strike coordination, and over-the-horizon targeting. The S-3 remained a critical part of carrier air wings until its retirement from front-line service.

Italeri's kit depicts either the early S-3A or upgraded S-3B configuration and provides excellent detail for a modern naval aircraft project. The model's distinctive folding wings, high-mounted engines, and carrier-borne appearance make it stand out in any collection.

Historical Background

Nicknamed the "Hoover" by its crews because of the sound produced by its engines, the S-3 Viking became one of the most versatile aircraft in U.S. Navy service.

During the Cold War, Vikings hunted Soviet submarines across the world's oceans. Following the end of the Cold War, the aircraft transitioned into surveillance, aerial refueling, and support roles. The S-3 also participated in operations during Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous carrier deployments worldwide.
