Italeri 1/48 Fiat G.91R “Gina”

Kit No. 92645

The Fiat G.91 was developed during the 1950s to satisfy NATO’s requirement for a lightweight tactical strike fighter capable of operating from austere airfields with minimal support infrastructure. Designed by legendary Italian engineer Giuseppe Gabrielli, the compact jet earned the nickname “Gina” and became one of the most recognizable European light attack aircraft of the Cold War.

The aircraft served extensively with the Italian Air Force, the Luftwaffe, and the Portuguese Air Force, seeing operational use in Portugal’s African colonial conflicts while also becoming famous as the mount of the Italian Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team.

Italeri’s 1/48 scale kit is based on the classic ESCI tooling, updated with modern decals and packaging. Despite its age, it remains one of the few accessible G.91 kits in this scale and continues to be popular with Cold War aircraft enthusiasts.

Builder & Reviewer Feedback

Builders consistently praise the kit for:

  • Excellent overall aircraft shape

  • Unique Cold War NATO subject

  • Compact and attractive finished appearance

  • Straightforward assembly

  • Good value compared to rare alternatives

  • Strong Luftwaffe and Italian Air Force marking options

  • Excellent weathering potential

Cybermodeler’s first-look review described the aircraft itself as:

“a solid performing aircraft” and highlighted the aircraft’s “mini-Sabre” appearance and NATO history.

Reddit modelers frequently describe the Italeri/ESCI tooling as:

“not a bad kit at all, just very basic,” while also praising the overall fit and simplicity of the build.

Britmodeller discussions commonly note:

  • Good outline accuracy

  • Easy assembly compared to modern over-engineered kits

  • Nostalgic ESCI-era charm

  • Excellent basis for aftermarket improvements

However, advanced builders also point out several limitations tied to the vintage tooling:

  • Simplified cockpit

  • Sparse wheel well detail

  • Raised or shallow surface detail in some areas

  • Basic landing gear

  • Some inaccuracies around the rear fuselage contours

  • Soft detail compared to modern tooling

Many experienced modelers recommend:

  • Resin cockpit upgrades

  • Seat replacements

  • Re-scribing portions of the airframe

  • Additional antenna detailing

  • Improved wheel well plumbing

  • Luftwaffe or Portuguese operational weathering

Despite its age, the kit remains popular because there are relatively few alternatives for the G.91 in 1/48 scale.
