Italeri 1/35 Biber Midget Submarine Kit No. 5609
Italeri 1/35 Biber Midget Submarine
Kit No. 5609
The German “Biber” (“Beaver”) was one of the most well-known midget submarines deployed by the Kriegsmarine during the closing stages of World War II. Designed as a compact one-man coastal attack submarine, the Biber carried two externally mounted torpedoes and was intended for stealth attacks against Allied shipping and harbor targets. Despite its innovative concept, the tiny submarine suffered from severe operational limitations and poor reliability, resulting in heavy losses among crews.
The Biber became one of several desperate “small assault craft” developed late in the war alongside the Neger, Hai, and Molch mini-submarine projects. Today, surviving Bibers remain highly unusual and fascinating museum subjects for naval historians and modelers alike.
Italeri’s 1/35 scale Biber captures the distinctive compact submarine with external torpedoes, detailed hull lines, and included crew figures. The kit’s relatively small size makes it manageable on the workbench while still offering excellent super-detailing and weathering opportunities.
