Full Product Description

Hasegawa 1/32 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate "Frank"

The Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate ("Gale"), known to Allied forces as "Frank," was the most capable Japanese fighter to see large-scale operational service during World War II. Combining high speed, excellent maneuverability, armor protection, and heavy armament, the Ki-84 could compete with virtually any Allied fighter it encountered.

Powered by the Nakajima Homare radial engine, the Ki-84 entered combat in 1944 and quickly established a formidable reputation in the Philippines, Okinawa, China, and the defense of the Japanese homeland. Armed with combinations of 20mm and 30mm cannon, it was one of the few Japanese fighters capable of effectively engaging high-flying B-29 Superfortresses.

Hasegawa's 1/32 scale Hayate captures the aircraft's sleek lines and aggressive appearance with excellent engineering, crisp molding, and highly regarded fit. Despite being over twenty years old, many builders still consider it among the best large-scale Japanese aircraft kits ever produced.

Historical Background

The Ki-84 was introduced in 1944 as Japan's answer to increasingly capable Allied fighters. With a top speed approaching 390 mph and exceptional climb performance, it could match aircraft such as the P-51 Mustang, F6F Hellcat, and P-47 Thunderbolt under favorable conditions.

More than 3,500 Ki-84s were produced, making it one of Japan's most important late-war fighters. Today, only one original aircraft survives, preserved in Japan.
