Full Product Description

Hasegawa 1/32 Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien "Tony"

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien ("Flying Swallow"), known to Allied forces as "Tony," was unique among major Japanese fighters of World War II. Unlike most Japanese aircraft powered by radial engines, the Ki-61 used a liquid-cooled inline engine derived from the German Daimler-Benz DB 601.

Its sleek appearance caused Allied pilots to initially mistake it for European aircraft such as the Bf 109 or Italian fighters. The Ki-61 served extensively over New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and the Japanese Home Islands, where it became one of Japan's primary interceptors against B-29 Superfortress raids.

Hasegawa's 1/32 Ki-61 captures the elegant lines of the Hien with crisp molding, fine rivet detail, and a detailed cockpit. The kit emphasizes accurate external appearance and excellent fit rather than excessive hidden interior detail, making it an enjoyable project for both intermediate and experienced builders.

Historical Background

The Ki-61 entered service in 1943 and quickly gained a reputation for speed, diving ability, and rugged construction. Its inline engine gave it a distinctive appearance unlike any other Japanese fighter.

As the war progressed, the aircraft was increasingly used to intercept American B-29 bombers. Many of the most famous Ki-61 units, including the 244th Sentai defending Tokyo, flew the type during the final months of the conflict.
