Dragon 1/35 Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.D mit 28/32cm Wurfrahmen 40 ("Stuka zu Fuß")
For the Dragon 1/35 Sd.Kfz.251/1 Ausf.D mit 28/32cm Wurfrahmen 40 ("Stuka zu Fuß"), the most important buying criteria are accuracy, ease of assembly, rocket launcher detail, and whether you want the later Ausf.D or earlier Ausf.C vehicle. Dragon's later Ausf.D release (Kit 6861) is generally considered the better choice due to improved molding and engineering. Historical Background
The Wurfrahmen 40 was a mobile rocket artillery system mounted on the Sd.Kfz.251 half-track. Nicknamed "Stuka zu Fuß" (Walking Stuka), it carried six launch frames capable of firing either 280mm high-explosive or 320mm incendiary rockets. The system provided highly mobile fire support for Panzer formations.
What Modelers Like
Excellent Dragon Ausf.D half-track tooling
Choice of 28cm or 32cm rockets
Outstanding display presence
Detailed launch frames
Large amount of spare parts
Excellent weathering potential
Things to Watch Out For
Reviewers note that the launcher frames are the most challenging part of the build:
Launcher frame alignment is delicate
Instructions can be unclear in places
Rocket frames are somewhat fiddly
Best assembled directly on the hull rather than separately
For most builders, the Ausf.D Kit 6861 is the one to buy. It combines Dragon's mature Sd.Kfz.251 tooling with one of the most visually dramatic German support weapons of WWII and makes a spectacular centerpiece for an Eastern Front or Normandy diorama.
