Historical Background

The Avro Lancaster became the backbone of RAF Bomber Command during World War II. Entering service in 1942, it carried out strategic bombing operations across occupied Europe and Germany.

The Lancaster participated in many of the war's most famous operations, including the Dambuster raids, attacks on the battleship Tirpitz, and the delivery of the massive Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs. More than 7,300 aircraft were built, making it one of the most successful heavy bombers in aviation history.
