The Academy 1/48 TBM-3 Avenger "USS Bunker Hill" (Kit 12285) is actually one of the best Avenger kits available because it is based on the highly regarded Accurate Miniatures tooling. It combines excellent interior detail, a complete crew compartment, folding-wing capability, and very accurate shapes. Many modelers still consider it superior to the Hobby Boss offering despite its age.

Historical Background

The TBM-3 was the most widely produced Avenger variant. Built by General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division, it featured the more powerful R-2600-20 engine and became a mainstay of U.S. Navy carrier air groups during the final years of World War II. It participated in operations from the Philippines through Okinawa and the final strikes against Japan.

Many modelers still regard the Accurate Miniatures/Academy Avenger family as the benchmark in 1/48 scale.
